Start with the submission field, not the phone illustration
Apple groups screenshot requirements by device display class. The decorative frame in a design does not determine which class the exported image belongs to. Before opening a template, inspect the screenshot field in App Store Connect and compare it with Apple’s current specification table. Record the platform, orientation, and pixel dimensions you need. If you are supporting more than one form factor, treat those as separate design reviews rather than assuming a single portrait image will explain every interface equally well.
Common iPhone dimensions in the output registry
The verified registry includes portrait iPhone outputs such as 1179 × 2556, 1206 × 2622, 1290 × 2796, and 1320 × 2868 pixels. Their landscape counterparts reverse the width and height. These are specific entries in Apple’s table, not an invitation to export any similar aspect ratio. Use the selected preset’s actual dimensions and confirm that the corresponding submission class is appropriate for your app. Apple’s required classes and scaling behavior should be checked in the current official documentation rather than inferred from a device’s marketing name.
Design iPad images around the larger interface
The registry includes 2064 × 2752 and 2048 × 2732 portrait iPad outputs, with reversed dimensions for landscape. A phone screen enlarged inside a tablet frame does not demonstrate an iPad experience. Capture the actual tablet layout and choose a composition that makes its larger workspace visible. A multi-pane note app or drawing tool may need more image area and less promotional text than the corresponding phone design. Check that the selected screenshot class and orientation match the app you are submitting.
Keep source images sharp without distorting them
Use a source capture with enough detail for the portion that will appear in the export. Enlarging a small capture cannot recreate missing text or interface detail. Avoid stretching a source screenshot to match the canvas; adjust the crop or the surrounding layout instead. If the app’s important content sits near an edge, leave enough room inside the frame to preserve it. Compare the rendered panel with the original capture to catch missing navigation, awkward clipping, or a shape that no longer matches the interface.
Choose a flattened image format
Apple’s screenshot specifications permit PNG and JPEG and disallow alpha. Filling a transparent-looking background is not the same as removing an alpha channel from the encoded file. The export path should flatten the scene into an opaque result, and the downloaded file should be checked before submission. PNG is a useful choice for crisp interface edges and text. JPEG may be suitable for photographic content, but inspect compression around labels and thin lines before deciding that the smaller file is good enough.
Review each supported size as a separate composition
A resize changes the balance between headline, frame, and interface. Wider or shorter canvases may need a different headline break, screenshot scale, or alignment. Inspect every panel after changing the output size, including the last panel in a sequence. Keep the product promise consistent while letting the composition adapt. Do not assume that a correctly proportioned canvas guarantees that a long translated caption will fit, or that a panorama will keep the same visual rhythm after a change of orientation.
Check the files and the current source
Download a test image early and inspect its actual width, height, orientation, and legibility in an image viewer. For a set, extract the ZIP and confirm the number and order of the files. Apple currently permits up to ten screenshots per size, but you should use only the images that serve the listing and confirm current requirements in your submission interface. The supplied fictional sample screens must be replaced with accurate app content. These technical checks prepare the asset; they do not guarantee store approval.
