Design Mac App Store screenshots that preserve the workspace

A desktop app usually needs room to show relationships between panels, not merely a large device outline. Mac App Store screenshots work best when the real workspace is readable and the caption helps a visitor see what the arrangement makes possible.

Choose a Mac output rather than a generic wide canvas

Apple’s verified Mac screenshot entries are 1280 × 800, 1440 × 900, 2560 × 1600, and 2880 × 1800 pixels. Each is a 16:10 landscape format. A 1920 × 1080 marketing image can be useful elsewhere, but it is not one of those Mac App Store entries. Select the corresponding Mac output in the editor and compare it with the current submission requirements. Keep the delivery dimensions separate from the shape of any illustrated laptop or desktop frame you add to the composition.

Capture the real Mac interface

Show the app running with its actual Mac layout, controls, and useful populated content. A web dashboard or phone screenshot inside a desktop frame is not a substitute for a genuine Mac app capture. Prepare a clean example workspace that explains the task without exposing private filenames, personal messages, account information, or client material. Close unrelated notifications and remove temporary debug artifacts. Retain enough surrounding interface to make the app’s behavior understandable, especially when an important action depends on a toolbar or sidebar.

Let the workspace occupy enough of the image

Desktop interfaces can be dense: menus, navigation, documents, and secondary controls all compete for attention. If the screenshot is too small, the viewer sees a generic window rather than a useful product. Choose a template with generous image area and a restrained headline. A frame can add context, but its bezel should not consume the space required for the app. Inspect the image at a small viewing size and determine whether the central task is still visible without reading every label.

Explain one workflow per panel

A writing app might show drafting, organization, and final review as different panels. A developer tool might show a project overview, an important inspection view, and a completed result. Pick screens that are meaningfully different instead of capturing the same workspace with a changing highlight. Use the headline to identify the task, then allow the visible interface to provide the detail. If a control is too small to carry the story, consider a focused view that remains truthful to the app rather than inventing a simplified interface.

Use typography that supports the desktop density

Keep promotional type short and give it a distinct zone. A caption running across a complex toolbar is difficult to read and may conceal useful evidence. Avoid making the headline enormous just because the canvas is landscape; the app view still needs room. Repeat alignment and spacing across the set so the eyes know where to look first. When showing a light interface, a slightly contrasting background can separate the screenshot edge without requiring a heavy shadow or a visually dominant frame.

Check resized designs rather than trusting the preview

Moving from one 16:10 size to another preserves the aspect ratio, but the resulting image still needs inspection. Source-image quality, type rendering, and fine interface lines can behave differently at different pixel dimensions. Export an early test and open it in an image viewer. Compare the task area with the source capture and look for unintended clipping or scaling. Check every panel after adjusting a frame, because a toolbar or bottom status area can disappear behind a crop without being obvious in a small editor preview.

Prepare the final set and retain editable work

Confirm the image count, file ordering, exact output dimensions, and opaque PNG or JPEG format. Review Apple’s current screenshot specifications and the relevant Mac submission fields. Replace all fictional template content and remove any claims that the current app cannot substantiate. Keep the editable project backup with your original Mac captures so an interface update can be reflected later. The template and export tool help prepare the artwork; neither guarantees store acceptance nor endorses a particular caption or decorative treatment.
